The Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare has issued an advisory cautioning Nigerians about the newly detected COVID-19 variant, XEC, which has now spread to 29 countries worldwide.
In a statement released by the ministry’s Director of Information and Public Relations, Alaba Balogun, it was clarified that there is currently no evidence of the XEC variant in Nigeria. However, the ministry noted that the variant demonstrates a growth advantage over other circulating strains, raising concerns about its potential impact on public health globally.
While urging the public not to panic, the ministry emphasized the importance of adhering to universal health precautions such as regular handwashing. The government has also intensified surveillance at all points of entry into the country to monitor potential cases.
To bolster preparedness, the ministry highlighted upgrades made to federal tertiary hospitals, including the establishment of molecular laboratories, isolation centers, and intensive care units equipped with ventilators.
Additionally, the ministry debunked a letter circulating on social media about a supposed resurgence of COVID-19 in Nigeria, labeling it as misinformation. Nigerians are advised to remain calm, continue their daily activities, and follow public health guidelines to ensure safety.
