A spokesperson from the Humane Society confirmed that the dogs were euthanized on Saturday.
SAN DIEGO — A tragic incident unfolded at Mesa Viking Park in the Mira Mesa neighborhood of San Diego on Friday, when three dogs attacked their owner, killing him and injuring another person, according to authorities and the Humane Society.
The dogs were euthanized on Saturday, confirmed Nina Thompson, a spokesperson for the San Diego Humane Society.
The attack, which occurred around noon, was reported to the San Diego Police Department. Authorities have not released the identity of the victim, but a spokesperson expressed condolences to his family: “Our hearts and deepest sympathies go out to the victim’s loved ones,” Thompson said.
In addition to the owner’s death, a second victim was hospitalized but is reportedly recovering.
Thompson mentioned that police have security footage showing the owner walking the dogs toward the park before the attack. Local resident Paul Ngo recalled seeing the man with his dogs earlier, noting that the man was urging the dogs to “be gentle, be nice” before the attack took place.
Following the attack, officers from the Humane Society and the police were able to locate two of the dogs, which were placed in bite quarantine. The third dog was found locked inside a vehicle and was also quarantined. All three animals will undergo rabies testing, Thompson added.
“We are fully committed to conducting a thorough and careful review of this incident in collaboration with our law enforcement partners,” Thompson said.
Mira Mesa is a postwar residential area, developed partially to accommodate personnel from nearby military installations, including what is now known as Marine Corps Air Station Miramar.
