Ukraine has initiated a fresh military offensive in Russia’s Kursk region, as reported by Russian defense authorities. Efforts to repel the Ukrainian assault are reportedly ongoing, with the situation on the ground remaining dynamic. This latest offensive follows an initial incursion by Ukrainian forces into Kursk last year, during which they secured a significant portion of territory. However, in recent months, Russian forces have regained ground in the region, though they have not entirely expelled Ukrainian troops.
On Sunday, the Russian defense ministry issued a statement via Telegram, detailing the latest developments: “At approximately 9 a.m. Moscow time, Ukrainian forces launched a counter-attack involving two tanks, a counter-obstacle vehicle, and 12 armored fighting vehicles in the Kursk direction.”
Military analysts and bloggers have provided additional insights into the assault. Reports suggest the attack originated from the Sudzha area, targeting the villages of Berdin and Bolshoye Soldatskoye, strategically located on the path to Kursk city.
In Ukraine, officials have expressed optimism about the operation. Andriy Yermak, head of the presidential office, described the developments as “good news from Kursk Region,” adding that Russia is “getting what it deserves.” Similarly, Ukraine’s top counter-disinformation official, Andriy Kovalenko, noted that Russian forces in Kursk were caught off guard by attacks from multiple directions.
Despite the boldness of this offensive, it remains unclear whether it will result in significant changes to the frontline. Some military observers suggest the operation might be a diversionary tactic, with speculation that a larger assault could be launched elsewhere.
While Ukraine pushes forward in Kursk, its forces reportedly face challenges, including manpower shortages and territorial losses in the eastern regions, where Russian troops continue to advance.
In a related development, Ukraine’s Air Force reported intercepting a large-scale drone attack by Russia overnight. According to Ukrainian authorities, 61 drones were shot down across multiple regions, including Kyiv, Poltava, Sumy, Kharkiv, and Dnipropetrovsk. Although no direct hits were reported, intercepted drones caused minor damage to residential properties in Kharkiv.
This offensive comes amid ongoing tension along the Russia-Ukraine border. Earlier reports highlighted Ukraine’s unexpected advances in the Kursk region, which led Moscow to evacuate nearly 200,000 residents and label the operation as a “major provocation.”
While both sides continue to vie for control, the evolving situation in Kursk underscores the volatility of the conflict and the high stakes for both nations.
